St. Archangel Michael Orthodox Church This building is of great importance to the Serbian Canadian comminity in the greater Vancouver area. Following a great influx of Serbian immigrants to Vancouver in the 1990's, the existing cultural facilities proved to be insufficient and failed to reflect a positive, modern image of the community. The building serves not only the religious functions, but also offers venues for social and cultural gatherings, including a large multi-purpose hall, theater, art gallery and a library. The design successfully fuses the languages of traditional Serbian church architecture and modernism, to achieve a proverbial cultural bridge. The main atrium, which connects the church with the multi-purpose hall, feels like an open plaza and encourages informal social gatherings. |
